Jade's Schizophrenia research

Schizophrenia research

As the actress with Schizophrenia I decided to do a little background work on the subject in order for me to understand the character.

What is Schizophrenia?

Schizophrenia is a complicated health problem that affects thinking in the brain. It can show itself in a number of ways and not every person affected by this health problem will have the same symptoms as another.

* Schizophrenia can affect any person, and is normally developed in early adulthood. Some people get hit with it quickly, turning their thoughts into a complete muddle and can sometimes place hallucinations in their path. Some symptoms include:

* The person may hold an unusual belief that is false with unshakeable conviction.

* The person shows little emotion or if they do express any it may appear out of context, for example crying at a joke. They may become withdrawn, avoiding the company of friends and family and staying in their room.

* The person may say very little and rarely initiate a conversation. They may speak in a way that seems muddled and illogical, giving out little meaning. They may think or act in a way that cannot easily be understood. He or she may become uncharacteristically hostile to members of the family.

The behaviour is not deliberate and it is seen that the person is uninterested in life.

No one really knows the cause of Schizophrenia but It is believed that stress is one of the main contributors. Some people recover from this illness in about 5 years, some will never recover.

There is a common misconception that people with schizophrenia are dangerous, unstable people. The media, who sometimes use the terms like “schizo” in order to describe people who perform violent acts, is often to blame for this impression.

Chloe Tetu's Final Filming Plan- Dates and Order

Here are the main plans that I drew up. The sheet at the very top shows all of the locations we were planning to film in, with the dates which we were planning to film on, and also some extra information to work from. This information includes: the actions I thought the characters could be doing, props for the scenes and the type of costumes being used.

The following three pieces of paper basically show a similar thing but do have other details on them. These included various camera shots that we could try out/ use during our filming time.

As well as these plans being a record to show us when we completed the tasks, they were also a great help to look at if we needed to refer to them at anytime while filming. Because we were so organised with filming and stuck to pretty much all of the dates we had set, we were able to get everything finished quickly and efficiently, and even shoot some extra footage that we could use while editing our sequence.

Chloe Tetu's Basic Filming Plan- Dates and Order

Here is a basic plan of the locations that we were going to film in in a rough order with some notes written on it. However, the more important part of the sheet is located towards the bottom. This is the table that I drew out to see what lessons other members of my group had free so we could use it as potential filming time and use up all of our free time together efficiently. With Dylan and Jade being actors in the opening sequence of our film it was essential that these two, plus one other person, (someone that could film that could film), was free in the same lessons. Unfortunately, there was only one time gap that worked out for only three of the four group members, (them being, me/ Chloe Tetu, Dylan Meade and Jade Carey), that being lesson 4 on a Tuesday, starting at 12:10 and running to around 13:10. Ben wasn't able to film on this particular day, but he made up for it on the days that we all filmed together. Having this free period was a great help for our group as we managed to get some of the smaller scenes done earlier so we were able to focus more on other aspects of our production.

Chloe Tetu's Video Introduction to my planned Filming Dates and Order Information

Here is an introduction where I will briefly be talking to you about how I went about drawing out and organising the filming times and order for my groups production.

Chloe Tetu's Locations- Map for main scene

As a group we had decided that we were going to film the main scene at Southend beach. Because it was our main scene it was the most important and had to be planed for to make sure we could get the most of the location we had chosen. To ensure this, I printed a map of a a birds-eye view of the area that we thought we were going to film in and circled all of the potential places that we could use. This proved helpful as we had multiple sites to choose from, and were able to locate and look at the places quickly and easily.

(As you can see the map at the very top shows all of the potential filming locations and the map below shows the site that we actually filmed at).

I would like to give Google maps credit: http://maps.google.co.uk/ : for allowing me use of their website to acquire the map from.

Chloe Tetu's Locations Mood Board

In order to help out my group with locations, I made a mood board of all of the different places that I thought we could potentially film in. I knew that we had decided that we were going to film in a number of different places, so I got to work collecting images of different sites. Furthermore, I also wrote some notes and ideas around each photo of the things that I thought the characters could be doing in each scene, such as: eating a picnic in the field or holding hands whilst walking through the forest.

I would like to give credit to Google images: http://www.google.co.uk/imghp?hl=en&tab=wi : for providing me with the pictures to use on my mood board.

Dylan's idea's for music

Genre:

From our opening sequence analysis, all 4 of us would agree that most of the music played during the opening sequences we studied for romances were like a modern up-beat song, (mostly for romantic comedies), although most romantic comedies are targeted at teenagers so we need to look at who the audience for our film is. After conducting a survey on romance films, and the music appropriate for romance we found that the majority of people described romantic music (expected in an opening sequence) to be peaceful, warming and emotive. I also studied what people expected from a tragedy, and from the survey I found that people described it by depressing, emotional and sad.

Non copyright music:

-http://www.nvmdigital.com is a website that provides copyright-free music for film, DVD, websites, adverts, games, background music etc. The websites library consist of different albums that have different types of music, for example, some of the albums that we would consider for our opening sequence –which is a romance- are ‘Relaxing Music’, ‘Romantic Moods’, ‘Songs for Easy Listening’. Each album costs £19.95.

Royalty free tunes is similar to nvm digital, it offers a wide range of copyright free music for all.

-www.freeplaymusic.com this is an excellent site where you can select the genre or type of atmosphere you want to create and you get results of a list of different pieces of non-copyright music, this is an easy way to find and use music in our opening sequence.

Piano:

From the questionnaire we created, when we asked a question about what instruments they would associate with romance. I could conclude that most people said that they would associate romance with piano, other components were a harp and violin, however none of us can play these instrument so we will work with what we’ve got. In my opinion, I believe that the piano would play a perfect part in our film, as long as I create the ‘right’ piece that would suit the genre and follow the atmosphere of the sequence then it will be well suited.

Orchestral music:

One of the non-copyright music website provides orchestral music by famous composers such as Schubert, Mozart, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky Brahms etc. By using this, we can guarantee that we will create an atmospherically but dramatic, emotive piece of music. If we did use orchestral music, then we must obtain a piece of music that suits what we want to be in our opening sequence.

Garage band:

Garage band (on its website) is described as ‘your own recording studio. If you want to learn to play an instrument, write music, or record a song, Garage Band has everything you need.’ Garage band is an exclusive programme for apple macs which luckily, the school own four and I, myself owns one which is a bonus. The programme provides over 100 realistic software instruments such as pianos, strings, guitars etc. You can record music by plugging in the electric instrument wire into the computer and it transfers onto garage band, which produces a clear sound. A possibility I could use is with research of famous film music composers I could create a piece of music (using the strings section in garage band) which has the same kind of feel/atmosphere as these famous composers.

Research on composers for film:

I am going to look at some famous composers that right music for films. John Williams: famous for creating the music for classic films such as: Star Wars, Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, Jaws, Indiana Jones and E.T. the Extra Terrestrial. As a musician, if I were to create a piece of music, I would consider composing a piece similar to John Williams on garage band using the orchestral software instruments (strings, horns, and woodwind). However not many of the films the William’s has composed for suit the genre of our film.

Jade's location questionnaire

Locations questionnaire

I have created a questionnaire on location, in addition to my characters and actors one, as my topic was locations.

Below is the video that should be on slide 15, but due to trouble have had to put it separately

Dylan's risk assessment

These are things that we needed to consider before and during the filming:

The weather
We needed to know what the weather was before we started filming for several reasons. Some of the scenes we shot, we set to be during the summer and we had to check to make sure the weather will fit the description of the scene, however in that particular scene it unexpectedly rained after the weather forecast told us differently which we had to work with. We were prepared in each scene, just incase it did rain so we carried around umbrellas to protect our equipment.

The time of day
We had to be cautious of what time of day we filmed, because as our filming was going to take place during late autumn/early winter, we needed to film before about 16:30, which was when it got dark. We needed day light so when it came to editing, the film didn't look to unclear or dark. If the film did come out too dark, then we would have enhanced the shots during the editing stage.

Season
The season we filmed in was autumn and winter, although one or two scenes needed to set in a summer setting and in one of the summer scenes, the tree's were leafless. There isn't much we can do about this as this was the only time we could film.

The tide
We had to research what time the tide came in and went out on the day of filming our main shoot. We wanted our scene to include the tide coming in slowly to give it a more interesting effect which adds to the water imagery. Although the tide came in a lot faster than we expected, we completed all the filming that we needed.

Potential danger hazards
Our main scene is set on a jetty type pier by the sea, we needed to be careful of slipping on the wet surface, or falling off the side. Another scene was located on the side of the road, we had to be cautious of cars driving past.

Damage to the camera
We had to be extra careful to make sure that nothing damaged the camera, such as rain or sand.

Ben's Genre Questionnaire

Genre Questionnaire Analysis

This is my summery of the questionnaire that i created about Genre, which was the section i chose from the 4 categories, which were: Genre, Characters and Actors, Music, and Props and Costumes

Ben and Jade's Questionnaire ideas

Before we all completed our questionnaires Ben and I thought it would be a good idea to think of ideas for questions that we could use in them. Some of these ideas have been implemented in our work. This is the final copy.

Jade's questionnaire results

This is the questionnaire that I created on characters and actors. The idea of this questionnaire was to help give us all ideas on our opening sequence, from other members of the public.

Below is the video that should be on slide 22, however it doesn't seem to work on the powerpoint.

How would you describe a couple in a romance?

Jade's contributions (allocated jobs)

In our preparations for our film opening sequence, it was decided that we should all have specific roles, but with freedom to express ideas in each other’s fields. My primary job was locations for which I was open to ideas from all other members. We all discussed where best to film, and it was decided that Southend was a good option. After this I then went away and spent a lot of time researching into different scenes in romance films and what was good about all of the locations we had decided as a team. Another of my roles was clothes. As the actress I had the most input of what clothes to use, as I created the female character profile and had access to all of my clothes. As well as this I did some of my own hair and contributed to hair ideas. I also experimented with different make-up techniques to aid our group.

Chloe Tetu's Survey Results

survey results

In order to get an idea of the things that our audience would expect to see in a romance film, each individual in our group made a survey to give to people to complete. Our surveys consisted of some universal questions, and also involved questions corresponding to the jobs that we have been allocated within our team. Here are my survey results.

Chloe Tetu's Preparation Contributions (allocated jobs)

In our group each team member has been allocated specific jobs which we are in charge of and have to complete. The jobs that i have been allocated for our opening sequence preparation includes; parts of mise en- scène, such as, hair, make-up, costumes and props. In these roles I chose costumes and props specific to the locations in which we are filming at and, equally, had to make sure that everything correlated to the actions the characters would be making in the film. I am also partly in charge of locations, where I have completed a mood board of the places which my group are going to film in, and by doing various other tasks. I have also worked and helped out in a few other sites of preparation.

Job Allocation

In order to get everything done, as a group we decided to allocate jobs to each individual. Each person chose which jobs they were going to do/ take part in meaning everyone was happy with the work they were doing.

The mood board

This is the mood board for our film which myself and jade worked on. It consists of pictures of possible props, locations and costumes.

Photo storyboard

This is the photo storyboard, basically used to distinguish the type of shots we are using and what actions will be going on. This will be easy for us to follow when we are filming our opening sequence.

Final sketched storyboard

After looking at the planned storyboard and all of our ideas, we all drew up the final sketched storyboard.

Film Name Ideas

These are the ideas that we came up with for the film.

Sound list (Planning)

This is the sound list on which the ideas for the sounds in the film were put down on.

Storyboard (Plan)

When we all gave in our own ideas on how we thought the opening sequence should go, we got started on planning a storyboard using the best thoughts from each person. we ended up drawing a few different storyboards, but finally decided on one that everyone was happy with. (The first two images in the column). When we finished the storyboards we even managed to write most of the narration that the male character is going to say in the sequence.
