Genre:
From our opening sequence analysis, all 4 of us would agree that most of the music played during the opening sequences we studied for romances were like a modern up-beat song, (mostly for romantic comedies), although most romantic comedies are targeted at teenagers so we need to look at who the audience for our film is. After conducting a survey on romance films, and the music appropriate for romance we found that the majority of people described romantic music (expected in an opening sequence) to be peaceful, warming and emotive. I also studied what people expected from a tragedy, and from the survey I found that people described it by depressing, emotional and sad.
Non copyright music:
-http://www.nvmdigital.com is a website that provides copyright-free music for film, DVD, websites, adverts, games, background music etc. The websites library consist of different albums that have different types of music, for example, some of the albums that we would consider for our opening sequence –which is a romance- are ‘Relaxing Music’, ‘Romantic Moods’, ‘Songs for Easy Listening’. Each album costs £19.95.
Royalty free tunes is similar to nvm digital, it offers a wide range of copyright free music for all.
-www.freeplaymusic.com this is an excellent site where you can select the genre or type of atmosphere you want to create and you get results of a list of different pieces of non-copyright music, this is an easy way to find and use music in our opening sequence.
Piano:
From the questionnaire we created, when we asked a question about what instruments they would associate with romance. I could conclude that most people said that they would associate romance with piano, other components were a harp and violin, however none of us can play these instrument so we will work with what we’ve got. In my opinion, I believe that the piano would play a perfect part in our film, as long as I create the ‘right’ piece that would suit the genre and follow the atmosphere of the sequence then it will be well suited.
Orchestral music:
One of the non-copyright music website provides orchestral music by famous composers such as Schubert, Mozart, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky Brahms etc. By using this, we can guarantee that we will create an atmospherically but dramatic, emotive piece of music. If we did use orchestral music, then we must obtain a piece of music that suits what we want to be in our opening sequence.
Garage band:
Garage band (on its website) is described as ‘your own recording studio. If you want to learn to play an instrument, write music, or record a song, Garage Band has everything you need.’ Garage band is an exclusive programme for apple macs which luckily, the school own four and I, myself owns one which is a bonus. The programme provides over 100 realistic software instruments such as pianos, strings, guitars etc. You can record music by plugging in the electric instrument wire into the computer and it transfers onto garage band, which produces a clear sound. A possibility I could use is with research of famous film music composers I could create a piece of music (using the strings section in garage band) which has the same kind of feel/atmosphere as these famous composers.
Research on composers for film:
I am going to look at some famous composers that right music for films. John Williams: famous for creating the music for classic films such as: Star Wars, Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, Jaws, Indiana Jones and E.T. the Extra Terrestrial. As a musician, if I were to create a piece of music, I would consider composing a piece similar to John Williams on garage band using the orchestral software instruments (strings, horns, and woodwind). However not many of the films the William’s has composed for suit the genre of our film.
Outstanding research Dylan, you have considered this carefully and I look forward to the finished result.
