The final and complete opening sequence:




Editing rough cut:
To make sure that we create a product of a high standard, we decided to get some final audience feedback. One of the things that was suggested was that the second shot (of the camera moving towards the female character) looked amateurish. This was deliberate to what we wanted to portray - a faux-naif effect to convey the character as naive and innocent (similarly to the hand held camera). So we counter-balanced the audiences view and our aims by removing the ambient sound (which was increased in speed), by doing this, it comprimised the audiences and groups views into something we believe has improved our product. We were also trying to incoporate appropriate conventions of romance genres by creating a similarity to '500 Days Of Summer'.

Additionally, a minor mistake pointed out was that 'starring' was spelt incorrectly, which we most definatly needed to change in order to avoid an amateur profile.

Final Cut Feedback (Editing)

the feedback i got for the final cut was majoritally positive. It was said the black and white was seen as good editing and was appropriate to the film, the voice over fit into the film well and the last shot was said to be impressive. On the other hand it was suggested to take off the words at the end of the film and to enlarge the logo as it was a bit to small. I did not use a shattering font in the titles like it was suggested in the rough cut feedback as the options available were limited and to fantasy like. I took all of this into consideration and then made all the appropriate

For editing I: researched opening titles; organised the titles with Chloe; helped with transitions (gave advice and suggestions); re-editied titles (enlarging and changing the font) with Dylan; uploaded the footage with Chloe; found the best shots from the original footage with Jade; put the male voice of the character in the footage at the correct space with the entire group.

Dylan's editing post

When contributing to the editing section of our film, I edited almost everything to do with sound, importing the music from garage band and coincided it to the film where it fit the most. I also arranged all the dialogue (the narrative) and balanced out all of the volumes so each part of the sound (music, dialogue and non diagetic sounds) could be heard to the level where they all compromise each other. Myself and Jade (other member of our group) incorporated the black and white effect and explored the programme to eventually find the rewind tool which we adapted to our scenes. I helped re arranging the scenes to find the correct order, cutting the parts so it would fit into 2 minutes. Lastly, i assisted Ben (another member of our group) directing and composing the titles.

Dylan's final cut feedback for sound

The feedback that we received overall for excellent, our viewers enjoyed the extract and we had various positive feedback from different people. In sound, the feedback was mostly good, some said that they loved the music and thought that it was perfect for the extract and coincided perfectly. However there were some points that the diagetic dialogue didn't fit well with the real time, we have taken this into account and moved the sound so that it fit well. Others said that the narrative was too quiet as well, which we have improved by increasing the volume. There was another criticism that some of the non-diagetic sound was too loud, so we then turned the films sound down to compromise the volume of the music.

Jade's contribution to editing

I think that, for the majority of the editing our group worked together. There was some parts in which we all worked on separately or in pairs. The following shows what I am responsible for:

Right at the beginning of the editing stage, Ben and myself took all of the best pieces of film and arranged them in a rough order. We then cut some of these so that all of the best takes were in the working area.
I successfully rendered all of the original film pieces after arranging them with Ben. This meant we could work on them quicker.
Dylan and I worked on the effects. We also changed the beginning of the sequence to a more suited frame, now known by me as the "quiet scene" This is because it is silent and impacts on the audience. As well as this, we made sure that it fit into a two minute time frame. We spent ages playing around with the speed of the memory scene and settled on fast as it was a replay of past events. We also decided that black and white was a good option as, it too, is a representation of things from the past.

I was also a part of the group discussions during the adding of the titles, even though Dylan actually set them, we were all there giving our ideas over; this is the case for most.

Jade's Camera and location rough cut feed back

From the rough cut feedback we have improved on making the protagonist look more 'menacing' with our editing. Everything else said was positive: The movement of the camera; the placement of the camera; the lighting; the varied amount of shots; location and the variety.

This shows that we have listened to what the audience wanted and we are pleased that our finished production worked well.

Chloe Tetu's Final Cut Feedback for Mise en-Scène

From showing the final opening sequence to various viewers, my group received feedback on several areas. Because I was the person mainly in charge of Mise en-Scène I took most of the feed back for it, like I did in the rough cut feedback. Most of the feedback that was received was all positive, especially for the costumes and props. Viewers said that the items selected were perfect for the film and worked really well in their placement, much like they did in the comments they gave for my groups rough cut feedback.

Overall, everyone in my group was really pleased with the comments given and the outcome of the project. Everyone who watched the sequence seemed to enjoy it and said that they thought it was really well put together.

Chloe Tetu's Editing Contribution

Throughout the editing phase the whole group worked together to piece the final production together. Each person did specific things but all helped each other during manufacturing. The editing that I did/ contributed to includes: uploading the footage to Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 on a standard computer; adding transitions like, cross fading various pieces of footage together, such as the part where the flower the girl is holding fades into the face of the male character and then back again (as you can see in the images provided below); I pieced together parts of the voice over with my group, such as the part where the male character shouts/calls the name of the girl ‘Jade’ and I also helped with the organising of the titles, including putting them on the film and arranging them accordingly. With everyone working together and doing their bit for the group, I think we managed to edit our piece together making it look professional and of a high quality.

Ben's DVD Cover (final version)

Above is the revised version of the DVD cover.

After i made the draft copy i recieved feedback about the look of the DVD cover, it was suggested that there should be more colour on the front. From a personal point of view I found the black and white style effective therefore, I decided to only put the people in colour. It was also pointed out that i needed to include the film certificate on the sidebar and the front cover, as well as the production company's logo.

Overall, I feel that the DVD cover looks very pleasing and would fit in well on a store shelf and would not look out of place.

To create the DVD Cover for 'Forget Me Not', first of all I measured the dimensions of an actual DVD Cover and then open up a an Adobe Photoshop file with these dimensions.



Above is the DVD cover of the film 'Serenity' which I was using as an example guidline for the features i should use on my DVD cover. For the DVD cover I included all the main features you would see, this being: the film title; the tagline; the blurb and speacial features; production details; running times; film certificate; barcode and not for rental guidlines.

What?

Our target audience was females aged 19-24. We further discussed this topic and decided what audience profile(s) our opening sequence would fall into. I will be explaining them and why we thought this.

Genre

The genre of our opening sequence was chosen to be a romantic drama. Having chosen this genre, our primary target audience would be females in our chosen age range.

Demographic

We decided that the demographic of our film opening sequence should be working class to middle class citizens. This was because of the people in the film would be seen as this. Targeting it at this demographic could also mean the budget of the film could be raised.

U Films

U rated films are designed for the younger audience possibly families. The most common ‘U’ rated film generator is Walt Disney and Walt Disney pictures which have released around 318 films altogether.

The Aristocats

The Aristocats is a ‘U’ because it contains only things that are acceptable:

• There is a small amount of violence and gore

Edgar catnaps the cats.

Napoleon and Lafayette attack the butler on two separate occasions.

Napoleon hits Lafayette.

Edgar throws the cats in a large sack.

There's a fight between the alley cats and Edgar.

None of the violence is graphic.

Dylan's information on Garage Band

Gareg band is a creative programme provided by Apple Macintosh' (which we have in school, and at home where i can personally use it). It is used to create compositions from a classical, full orchestra peice, to an synthed-based pop music. The Apple website describe the application as 'Your own recording studio', it has been created for people to learn to play an instrument, write music, or a song. To make things more helpful for me, I bought a plug in USB piano keyboard which i could use to play rather than using the mac keyboard (I can use the keyboard to play other instruments such as strings, woodwing, etc).

As i had decided that i was going to write an orchestral peice of music including strings, piano and woodwind (under the influence of Danny Elfman and David Newman), I had to think whether i was going to record it myself or use Garage Band software instruments to play it on. Since i don't own a full orchestra and cannot actually play most of the instruments, I have had to resort to Garage Band, which produces a much clearer quality- however sounds less realistic.

The instruments i would potentially use on Garage band are:
-Orchestral strings
-Hollywood strings
-Reflective strings
-Lunar strings
-Piano
-Piano on stage
-Woodwind

The decision was that i choose to use Orchestral strings (Garage Band do not provide specific strings instruments like Cello, Violin, Viola etc... but we have the ability to change the pitch so I don't have to worry about getting the specific instruments to play). The piano plays the lead role in the peice of music, being the first instrument to introduce the composition.

Dylan's research on famous pianists

As piano was nominated the instrument mostly associated with romance films, I wanted to consider using famous pianists music (or listen to their music, and see if i can find influence).

Yiruma:

The 32 year old Korean is accordingly internationally known for creating colourful music that uplifts spirits. His most famous song being 'River Flows In You'. This song is so emotional, and full of happiness, but at the same time, gives you a feeling that you are longing for something or perhaps someone. Perfect cadences and twinkling ornaments (acciaccaturas) will produce the perfect atmosphere and mode. 'River Flows In You' is probably my favourite piano piece of music, so i would passionately incorporate this into our opening sequence if we used this. Another one of my favourites (also by Yiruma) is 'May Be' similar to 'River Flows In You', however contains more of a story line, and expresses itself through changing its key into its relevant minor a back frequently (which would add to the tragic side of our film as well as the romantic side). The dynamics and pitch are also explored more in this piece of music- if being used in our film, will convey the way that Jades (the main character) mental illness is spontaneous and uncontrollable.

Lang Lang:

A Chinese pianist aged 28, extremely well known in Europe and North America. The song that i have looked at, and love is called 'Time For Dreams' (featuring Schiller), it is a fantastic piano piece accompanied by synths timpani's and other percussion. Although these instruments create quite a modern up beat sound, this could challenge the usual, romantic tragedy films. This piece of music portrays quite an adventurous, spontaneous mood. You could say it is quite an enthusiastic composition creating a variation of positive moods, however it is intense, a lot is going on in the piece, the texture is thick. This could somehow link in with our opening sequence, keeping the atmosphere less depressing. We need to look at what classification our film is as this type of music will be more suited to the younger.

Joe Hisaishi:

Joe Hisaishi (Japenese, 60 years old) is most well known for working with Ghibli Studios, creating piano and orchestral music for animated films such as the famous 'Spirited Away', 'Howls Moving Castle' and 'Princess Mononoke'. The fact that Joe Hisaishi is known for exclusively working with these animated films, there is no way we could use of of his pieces, as people who have seen those films well automatically know that it is also from that film, we need to be unique. I will use Joe Hisaishi as huge inspiration, as from what i've listened to (tracks such as 'One Summers Day', 'The Sixth Station' and 'Reprise' from the film Spirited Away, i can gather that them pieces of music portray the scenes, in terms of story line and also the emotion being shown. For example if we use 'One Summers Day', the main piano solo line (one note at a time to begin with) with distorted chords and an accompanied strings section that plays a background role, which however carries out an occasional call and response technique where one instruments speaks, and the other instrument answers-this is a good technique for if there is two main characters. At around 1:30 (from the link), we hear a beautiful, lonely high pitched phrase representing the character, but suddenly the next phrase is the strings reassuring the first phrase (call and response), the third phrase is a repititition of the first phrase in this extract however textured more thick, gushing out pure emotion, expressing the feeling heavily. This is only 30 seconds of the piece I analysed, and already that has helped me explore how i can express real emotion through music- creating characters within each instrument-whether i choose to use this technique in my copmosition or not.

Dylan's Original Music Soundtrack

I thought it would be appropriate to create a soundtrack, to go with the DVD and poster, as part of cross media convergence, this would be used to help promote our film. The front cover consists of an image of Jade (from the opening sequence) at the beach scene on the pier. Whilst editing the cover to make it look more effective and imaginitive, I used a blur effect, that focused on the face of Jade-I wanted to make it almost look like a shallow focus effect. I tinted the image in a grey, the reason being to add onto the colour imagery, that the character doesn't just see life through white, but also through black (in her second personality), and as you know, white and black mixed create grey. The font I used is appropriate to the whole style of the film, using two different fonts, one in which has a slant, partly curly and modern, and the other being more straight, a bit like hand writing. I choose the fonts personally because i quite liked them but also because i felt like it needed to be bold to catch attention and it needed to be attractive to the eye, i wanted it also to suit th style. Lastly i choose the colours only to compliment the background, however the white does actually connect with the personality of the main character Jade-natural, pure and angelic.

Editing wise, i used the same effect, creating a shallow focus effect on the flower, tinting everything else grey. However, i enhanced the colour on the flower itself, so the beauty of the forget me not is presented well. I thought that within the image, all attention needed to be focused on the flower to help create the impact on the flower imagery, how the flower links in with the story and the character. The image is a shot from behind jade, looking out to sea. The white font representing the character and also complimenting the background like in the front cover. The titles of the peice of music were completely originally made up by myself with a tiny bit of help from some of the other members of my group, we just choose names that sounded like they associated with the film well. One thing i didn't take into consideration was where a barcode would go, they are usually in the bottom right corner of the back cover, which in my cover, would go ontop of the name of the composer which is an important part of information, although it is also on the front cover.

From my questionnaire for music, some people suggested that romantic films usually use songs, usually a pop song with lyrics. So i need to take into consideration all potential music that we could possible use in our opening sequence. Of course with popular music, they include lyrics so we need to acknowledge the words used and whether or not they fit with our genre/opening sequence. Another think we need to take into account is the vocals, if the gender is male or female-I feel that if we use a man's voice singing then the audience will automatically think that the concept of the song/lyrics are perceived from the male characters point of view, where a woman's vocals will indicate that it is most likely from the female characters perception.

Avril Lavigne:

The pop artist known for writing up beat, pop songs with a punk attitude. However she can create some spectacular ballads, full of emotion, passion and powerful vocals impeccably beautiful. Three of her songs would fit in well with the story of our opening sequence: 'When You're Gone', 'Keep Holding On' and the more upbeat 'Nobody's Home'. Lavigne is probably the main component of popular music that could potentially be used in our film sequence.

When You're Gone is a piano played accompanied by strings giving a heart warming, affectionate effect, gradually introducing drums and guitars. This song -musically- definitely creates the effect i want in the opening sequence, although it lacks intensity. As you can see these lyrics refer to when somebody leaves you, you don't know who you are, or what to do, needing the person you long for. In terms of our film, the audience could understand it as the female characters 1st personality knowing what she's about to do (jump off the edge) in her 2nd personality, she can't control herself although she still loves him. You could also perceive it from both their point of views, from the male- what is he going to do without her? his soulmate, the one he expected to be with for the rest of his life.

This song begins with strings and a strumming guitar, in my opinion it somehow gives me a sense of isolation, which is how the main character feels-isolated. The perfect melody companies Lavigne's enchanting voice. The song is not too upbeat so if we used it for our film it would smoothly fit in with the opening sequence. The lyrics are about holding onto what you've got, what you love and this is partly what our film would be about, how the male character would do anything for her even in her 2nd personality, the lyrics would be directed from the mans point of view which I don't think would be a good idea to use.

Nobody's home is an upbeat song with a sense of depression or loss. We can tell from the music that although it has a fast rhythm, the choice of chords and instruments (strings) show that it is disheartening. This would be excellent for our opening sequence, darkening the mood. The lyrics spell out basically that she's lost inside, she doesn't know where she belongs-this is exact to how our female character feels. The song is sung through a third person describing another's feelings, which is how it would be perceived by the audience, from an outsider.

As Jade, the female in our film is the main character, i have gathered more songs sung by female artists.

Beautiful Together is a song by manufactured, goth pop artist Betty Curse. The music suggests a positive mood, with synth riffs and thick electric guitar chords, i feel that our opening sequence needs to include more of a negative feel so maybe it shouldn't be used, however the lyrics contradict what is happening in the opening sequence, this may be effective because it tells the opposite of what is happening, when perhaps the lyrics tell what should be happening, they should be strong a stay together, beautifully. This song explains itself- it's about how someone in a relationship feels that they'll always be together, 'nothing will ever rip us in two', it also explains how they are perfect fit for each other.

Catch Me is an acoustic song on guitar for the majority of the song, strings weaving in and out. The thin texture and soft dynamics adds to the scene, where there's silence between the to characters-this gives the lyrics an opportunity to kind of tell the story to us. A variety of piano riffs constantly (mostly high up on the piano) throughout the song. The high octave piano pattern gives a trickling effect adding to water imagery. Strings introduce themselves about a minute into the song, this creates huge emotion and produces a sound which the audience can decide themselves whether it's emotional in a positive a or negative way. On a downer note, although the lyrics represent the relationship between the two people -too short but beautiful- winter imagery is consistently mentioned throughout the song, we have no footage of a snow scene or to add onto the effect of the lyrics.

Harps and piano with a timpani drum and a choir. This should be the perfect combination for the opening sequence because pianos and harps were the instruments (according to my survey) you would associate the most with a romance film, and i agree, i think the choice of instruments are perfect for the sequence. The harp gives a beautiful running water effect, where the rhythm on the timpani is almost like small outburst which in a way represent schizophrenia- small outbursts into a 2nd personality. The lyrics talk about how someone has left them, and now everything has got dark, constantly having the other person on there mind 'in the shadow of your heart', like they have been left unguided in the dark with the torch. This is how our male character will feel after she commits suicide.

Calming piano chords at a heart beat-like rhythm, with a sweet voice. This will easily fit in with our opening sequence, however once it gets into the song a bit more, a bass drum beat enters which i don't think will suit the opening sequence. However the piano is innocent and beautiful-just like the main character. The lyircs can possibly relate well to our story line- 'It's like forgetting the words to your favorite song, you can't believe it, you were always singing along', in terms that it's talking about Jade changing from personality 1 to personality 2, forgetting your first personality.

This song hasn't got much relevance to our film lyrically, however it could perhaps be appropriate in the sense that danger follows the main character around everywhere she goes because of her 2nd personality and she can't guaranty that she'll be safe at all. The acoustic guitar that is played throughout the whole song comes across meaningful and creates a smooth, comforting sound which will play well with the opening sequence. It is a track that is easy to listen to and it most probably won't distract the audience from what is happening in the opening sequence. There is also another version including Ellie Goulding, which is faster and more powerful vocally.

Good Enough is a piano song with a string orchestra following it. The singers astonishing and impressive vocals, engrosses the passion to the meaning of this song, the feeling of being good enough. This relates to the story as the main characters supportive lover always treats her like she's more than good enough, but she doubts the thought of it, she believes that she doesn't deserve him because of the change in personality. This indicates that actually when she commits suicide, she could actually be in her original personality rather than her 2nd one, we're leaving the audience to wonder about it.

This song consists of only acoustic guitars and a solo violin. The solo violin represents loneliness adding to the fact that the main character feels isolated. I honestly cannot explain how emotional this song, musically and lyrically. In some way, it's depressive and quite disheartening, the singers accent is quite blunt and to the point making it more dramatic. I don't know how it's so emotional but it will fit our sequence very well. The lyrics describe how someone wishing for another person to feel the same way about them, Jades 2nd personality blatantly doesn't feel the same as the 1st personality and these lyrics would be perceived from the man's point of view towards Jade.

This song is exceedingly full with glowing emotion-the perfect cadences, the beautiful piano riff and the soaring violin synths presenting such affection and happiness. Ellie's soft hush-like voice creates a soothing and calm atmosphere, just like our opening sequence is. The lyrics consists of metaphors describing how either person in the relationship rely on each other parallel to the relationship in our film.

This is an acoustic song played on guitar, calm strumming keeping the mood comfortable. With deep, meaningful and expressive lyrics belted out by an attractive high pitched voice. The song would comfortably fit very well mostly lyrically but also musically.

Of course copyright is a huge issue here, most of these artist will most likely have copyright on the music which means we would not be able to use their music. Looking into lyrics and music- how they set the atmosphere and how it can easily be manipulated by small factors of the music/lyrics- it has given me an insight on what type of things i would be looking for in the certain type of genre of a film/opening sequence for a song. Doing this, I have also grown an interest in analysing, analysing music/lyrics and how it affects a moving image- I'm sure in someway this will also be helpful towards my analytical task in the exam on the basics of analysing representation and more.
